CELPIP Scores for Canada Express Entry: CLB 7, 9, and 10 Explained

Jul 2, 2026

For Canadian immigration, your CELPIP result is really a CLB result. CELPIP levels are calibrated one-to-one with the Canadian Language Benchmarks, so a CELPIP level of 9 in Speaking equals CLB 9 in Speaking. Express Entry programs are defined in CLB, which makes the mapping simple: whatever CLB a program requires, you need that CELPIP level in each skill.

Immigration rules and cut-offs change. Use the numbers below as orientation, then confirm the current thresholds and CRS rules on the official IRCC website before you rely on them.

Minimum CLB by program

ProgramTypical minimum
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)CLB 7 in all four skills (eligibility floor).
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)CLB 7 for TEER 0/1 jobs; CLB 5 for TEER 2/3.
Federal Skilled TradesRoughly CLB 5 (Speaking/Listening) and CLB 4 (Reading/Writing).

These are eligibility minimums, not competitive scores. Meeting the floor lets you enter the pool; it does not guarantee an invitation.

Why CLB 9+ matters for CRS points

In the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), language ability is one of the biggest point sources, and the points keep increasing as your CLB rises — with notable jumps as you reach CLB 9 and above. That is why CLB 9+ (CELPIP 9+) is the practical target for many candidates who want a competitive score, even though CLB 7 is the eligibility floor for FSW and CEC.

  • CLB 7 = you qualify, but with modest language points.
  • CLB 9 = a significant CRS boost, often the difference-maker.
  • CLB 10+ = maximises the language band for most candidates.

What score should you target?

A simple way to set your goal: start from the program you are eligible for, then aim one or two levels higher for CRS points if you can. For most Express Entry candidates the sweet spot is CELPIP 9 across all four skills; push individual skills to 10 where you are strong. If you are close to the next level in one skill, that skill is usually the highest-return place to spend prep time.

Citizenship (CELPIP-General LS)

For Canadian citizenship, IRCC accepts CELPIP-General LS, which tests only Listening and Speaking. The language requirement for applicants aged 18-54 is typically CLB 4 or above in those two skills — a lower bar than Express Entry, but still worth preparing for so you clear it on the first try. Confirm the current requirement on the IRCC website.

FAQs

Does CELPIP level equal CLB level?

Yes — they are calibrated one-to-one, so CELPIP 9 in a skill equals CLB 9 in that skill.

What CELPIP score do I need for Express Entry?

FSW requires CLB 7 in all four skills; CEC needs CLB 7 for TEER 0/1 and CLB 5 for TEER 2/3. Confirm current values with IRCC.

Is CLB 9 or 10 worth it?

Yes — CRS language points rise to CLB 9+, so reaching it can meaningfully raise your ranking.
